O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She was raised by her parents in Wheaton within Illinois and was graduated in 1981 with a degree from the Wheaton North High School. In commercials, she appeared prior to her move from Wheaton, Illinois, to Los Angeles. Her first assignment was to model in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later cast as a recurring part in ABC drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. Also, she guest starred in a variety of programs. She appeared in both independently produced and made-for-TV films. Donna Abandando was her first big role on ABC's police drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the long-haired, secretariat character from 1993 to 1996 received Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actress. Together with the her castmates, she was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award for the best performance by an ensemble in a Drama Series in 1995.
