O'Neil auditioned for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while at high school. The singer made it through to the top 100 rounds following the judges' praise for her vocal ability. O'Neil was given high marks by the jury. However, she suffered massive losses during the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was within the bottom three as well as the bottom two. The judges were astonished by the results and encouraged the audience to support those with great singing talent similar to Melissa. With consistently excellent performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the Idol history. O'Neil received a call right away from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
